No Smoking

Martin Everald / do you smell that people? that's the stench of addiction and it's stinking up the outside.

NO SMOKING! The more and more time I spend downtown Toronto (especially), I realize just how much I hate the act and smell of smoking. And what's really annoying is that too great a percentage of population at OCAD (my school) enjoy it as a hobby or whatever, so whenever I'm going through an entrance or exit I get a face full of eau de cancer. I've even tried holding my breath and rushing through but I really don't like doing that. The worst was when we had that fire drill/ false alarm last year and we were all huddled in thick packs on sidewalks.

Sure on most cases it looks cool, that I will admit. Like for example one time when I was at my (former) workplace about five or six of the staff were out in the back on their break. There was great lighting in the sky, everyone had on these dark coats and trenches looking sorta tough-like and the were puffing away -I really wish I had a camera to capture the moment. But I digress.

It does look cool, but it reeks and I hear it does/ can do awful things to your health. And not just to your health but the people around the smokers like, me. Go google second hand smoke aka. "passive smoking". As far as I know there is no such thing as 'passive drinking' or 'passive rough/kinky sex'. And yes, we already know that everything in large quantities or sans moderation is bad and just might kill you. Go google drunk driving, self-asphyxiation, or "Super Size Me".

The Chicken Roaster

Martin Everald / "it's not fast food. it's good food quickly"

This was a great quote from Seinfeld. It was the episode where this fast food place has this bright sign that reds everything in Kramer's apartment.

'Eyes-dropping'

Martin Everald /was just 'eyes-dropping' on this guy writing his journal on the subway -it's really interesting to think about how much we don't share

Yeah, so I was on the subway today and I saw this guy writing in his journal. Yes, I was over-the-shoulder reading, yes, it was wrong but it sorta doesn't matter because a) I don't know him and will probably never see him again b) my subway stop interrupted the reading c) a lot of what I read I don't remember -and again it has no relevance to me because of the points listed in (a). The whole point like I mentioned in my facebook status is that, naturally, there is a lot of things that we don't share. There's a lot of information that we keep to ourselves for a whole bunch of different reasons.

It's also a coincidence because at the moment I'm reading the novel "What Was She Thinking: Notes on a Scandal" by Zoe Heller (which was made into a movie,"Notes on a Scandal" (THE BEST MOVIE EVER, by the way). The main character Barbara Covett, is a avid journaler who is writing about a scandal between a teacher and student at their school. Anyways, what is really interesting in the movie (amongst other things) is the difference between what is said and what is written. Of course we all understand these normal paradigms but it's captivating to see what the result is and how the various events unfold.

The New Gameboys

Martin Everald / 'so i guess ipod touches are the new gameboys'

Personally, I find that all the hype and excitement over personal, hand-held players has significantly died down. It's true every now and again you'll see an ad for the nintendo ds but that's about it. In the past there used to be the new annual hand-held but there seems to be a sort of stalemate -one that seems to be brought on by the iPod touch and the iPhone. It also seems to have increased the number of girls playing.

Book: Tossed & Found

I recently have acquired a wonderful and truly insightful book [Tossed & Found by Linda + John Meyers] all about how to turn something old back into something new. Whether it be from a “yard sale, construction site dumpster, or even your own attic.” It also includes examples of the things they’ve transformed with multiple photographs and how they actually put it together (tools, materials, and so forth.)

Now, being a next to new found object sculptor with a few successes under my belt I would really like to give it a try. All I’m going to say is that it will involve a standard oval bathroom sink. Photos to come when I’m further along

Art: Interesting Project -ART DESIGN 3[6]5

I found this through DRAWN!:

WHAT IS ART DESIGN 3[6]5?

"In an effort to mark my (Somsara Rielly's) 35th birthday with something meaningful and explore myself as a designer and artist – I am creating a collage a day for 3[6]5 consecutive days and documenting it here. I have always collected ephemera, kept a visual journal for many years, and have long been a sticker fanatic with an extensive collection that I am excited to finally give a purpose to. It is my intent to include at least one sticker in each collage. Thanks for stopping by!"

I think Eye Weekly news said it best, "Annie Clark's face could launch a thousand ships...and her brilliantly twisted art-pop songs could sink them." [week of Aug 6 2009]

Sink them as in, be amazing enough for you to lose your focus and mash yourself into some rocks like the sirens in Homer's Odyssey

I think my favorite so far might be 'the neighbors' but the whole thing is amazing so go listen, or better yet go buy!

Martin Carasco_Ttrip_Port Dover 09 (8)

So recently my art group has started up again and we've gone on a couple trips:

-kensington market/chinatown in toronto
-a street in hamilton (can't remember the name)
-port dover
-hamilton harbor
-burlington lakeshore
-bracebridge & port sydney

i've just started uploading my faves from port dover...i know it's a lot. i find the upload process on deviantart is a lot more detailed (which is actually why i haven't been here so long).

anyways at port dover, there is this rusted out building. apparently it was an airplane hanger used during the 2nd world war which they brought over. following that it was converted into a ship-building place and then after some construction to the area it was no longer used. so it's been sitting abandoned for about 40 years. it was a photographic goldmine! i will let the pictures say the rest...

Barack Obama killing a fly

"PETA rips Obama for killing house fly" [MY RESPONSE]

I know. I know! I couldn't believe it either. One of the most asinine things I've read. I was really shocked, and annoyed when I read the article in the Metro paper this morning. People who think like this, or have the time to think like this need to be committed.

Clearly PETA has nothing to do with their lives. Flies are insects, actually flies are PESTS that “can carry serious diseases” and according to good ole' wikipedia flies can "lay approximately 500 eggs in several batches of about 75 to 150, eggs" and it takes practically no time for them to turn back into flies again.

If a fly or any insect for that matter comes into my house be guaranteed that it WILL be destroyed. And normally, in the most violent way possible, because of the irritation they cause. So many times, I'll be all comfortable on the sofa, eating dinner or something, and watching tv then all you hear is bzzzzzz, bzzzzz as something flies around my head incessantly. I will then have to get up, put a cover my food, missa part of whatever I was watching and then spend time to beat it back into the molecules from which it was made.

But no, crusty PETA would want me to be uncomfortable, then capture it and release it back into the environment with their, “Katcha Bug™ Humane Bug Catcher” (for $8), all because they “support compassion even for the most curious, smallest, and least sympathetic animals.” FOOLS. DAM FOOLS. Bugs, unfortunately, are smart to some degree. “In 2008 it was discovered that a fly anticipates the approach of a threat, calculating the angle of attack, and alters its stance ready to make the most appropriate getaway. This evasive action, which allows the fly to jump away in the opposite direction, takes place within 200 ms.” So riddle me this, once you catch and release it, what the hell is stopping it from coming back and pissing you off all over again? Hmm??

One time there was this big fly making this really loud buzzing noise and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. When I finally found it, it took forever to kill. I was really pissed off. So when I finally got it, I scrapped it up with the swat and fed it to one of the spiders in the backyard and then I took pictures. I should look for them and post them. If I cared more I should probably just mail it to PETA with this entry, and the phrase “HAHA” on each picture.

Finally, where do they get off harassing the president about this? Can you image at a press conference: “Mr. President what about the children, or the economy, or foreign affairs…” and then some crusty person steps forward, “In 2009, you killed a fly. What do you have to say for yourself?!? A fly is a living breathing thing and you had no right to take away its life like that.” UGH. What I think he should do is sell off their company to the highest bidder and then pump that into the American economy that way you kill two birds with one stone.

"PETA rips Obama for killing house fly" [ARTICLE]

WASHINGTON - The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.

"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."

Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.

Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."

Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

I cannot believe that they are going to make another Final Destination movie. The first and second movie were good. The third was okay. But it's done. There was absolutely no reason for another. They wrapped up everything in the first two then I guess did a third for "fun" or for the sake of doing things in three's.

Some More Stella

Here's a few more commercials. So generally they tend to run along with the same theme but it's interesting to watch the various scenarios play out.

Stella Artois 4 Triple Filtered:

Plate of the Day:

The Flower Salesman:

Stella Artois -'The Life Légère'

The Stella Artois commercials are amazing. Then again this is all I can say seeing that a) I'm coming from a very creative/artistic/ and analytical background and b) I've never tasted Stella, but I hear it's really good.

The most recent commercial as far as I know is 'The Life Légère':

Primarily I love the vintage, European feel to it. You just want to be there in what I will assume is Paris, France. It's a nice spring day, smooth jazz in going on in the background, and you just wanted to stop for a small lunch or brunch -a panini or a croissant with an espresso on the patio of a quaint little cafe on the skirt of the city.

My analysis is this: the lady wants a beer but can't get one, however on the other side of the water, the gentleman (A) is just getting his. He sees her not getting a beer, or any attention, really, but is also interested in her in general. So being a gentleman he graciously offer her his drink, via napkin boat across the fountain. She receives the drink but I guess would rather have her own instead of just taking his, so she kisses it as a sign of gratitude and appreciation ('thanks, but I can't accept...') and sails it back to him. Unfortunately it doesn't make it back because it gets intercepted by a rogue ship from gentleman (B). (B) smiles and raises a quick toast to the lady. After all she is the reason for drink, she indirectly created a window of opportunity for the pillaging. She gives a quick smile back either because of the humor of the situation and/or she's now interested in (B) because he's 'bad' and a 'rebel'. (A) is at loss because his ship is gone, his beer is gone, and he's possibly lost the affection/attention of the lady.

I still question what exactly this has to do with 'The Life Légère' unless it's from (B)'s point of view where once you're 'smooth' and 'cool' you can get a great beer and the girl -which would make more sense.

Also I wonder if you can really make a paper boat strong enough to hold up a full beer bottle or if it just was special effect.

I'm Back

I’m back and I hope this will be more successful than my first attempts. I’m trying to get back in touch with my forgotten and unexplored creative outlets. I’m also trying to manage my time, because as much as I like to write (my own things on my own schedule) I’m torn between activities -activities including my personal life. I refuse to submit to a calendar and not do anything else because of school, or work or something else. I do realize the importance of those things but still… I would love the recipe for perfect balance. So I don’t know what or how often I will post, but I’m resuming.
